Become a Digital TV Installer

An online course is available to teach you the basics of how to run a business installing equipment that will provide Digital TV viewing. I've left the description wide open because I may extend the course to add new systems in the future. (I do update the course periodically, to keep up with current trends.)

(A couple of people have asked "Is the course still running?" Well, "Reload" this page. If it reloads then the course is still running.)

The course will interest fit and healthy people in the UK and nearby Europe with a driving licence who are interested in making money by running a business installing satellite TV and terrestrial TV systems. It will also be of interest to those who want to save money by installing their own system in (say) a guest house or similar.

The course includes but is not limited to:

  • Setting up a one man/woman business
  • Buying equipment and transport
  • Dealing with customers
  • List of real wholesale suppliers and contact details (lesson 7)
  • Installing Sky Digital (including a small movie)
  • Installing other satellite TV equipment
  • Installing a motorised dish
  • Installing indoor distribution systems (coaxial, CAT5E, multiswitches)
  • Installing terrestrial digital aerial systems
  • All relevant SatCure eBooks for free download!*
  • Web Site template
  • Private forum where you can have discussions with course members and get updates.
  • Audio interviews with successful installers.
  • Additional lessons cover air-conditioning and plasma-screens,

*Download details for each eBook will be supplied in the relevant lesson email. They are not all supplied at once.

Throughout the lessons, the emphasis is on maximising your earnings for minimum work. You'll find many useful hints and tips on this plus actual audio interviews from successful installers.

When you sign up for the course you will be asked to pay by Paypal. Paypal will pay your monthly £10 subscription for the duration of the course (currently 20 weekly lessons). Please note that you'll be required to spend another £20 on the recommended reference book. That's a total of just £70 for the whole course! (But you get eBooks to the value of at least £15.95). I'm sorry to disappoint those who wanted to pay up to £250 but I wanted to keep it fair and affordable. When you are rich and famous you can make a donation to my retirement fund. :-)

Your questions answered

How do I get the lessons?

After you sign up you will immediately receive an email with the link and password that directs you to the first lesson on a web page. Thereafter, you will receive a similar email each week until the end of the course and your Paypal account will pay us £10 per month until the course ends or until you cancel. (Cancelling is easy but you will not receive any more lesson notifications if you cancel).

Will I need to take time off work?

No, the entire course is provided via the Internet and you can read the lessons and do the homework in your own time at your own pace.

What qualifies you to write this course?

I'm 57, have a university degree in Electronics Engineering, have been writing and publishing technical books and manuals since 1987 and was Technical Manager for a major Satellite TV hardware Distribution company in the days of analogue satellite TV. (I also repaired over 25,000 satellite receivers so I understand how they work). I have carried out and helped with installations and continually offer advice to Joe Bloggs at home, as well as to professional installers who have momentarily lost their way. (I'm a lateral thinker). But enough about me. This is about your earning money.

Will the course give me a professional qualification?

No but it will give you a very good grounding in making money (legally) by installing systems. If that's not your bottom line then please don't sign up.

Will the course teach me all I need to know in order to do installations?

If you do and read all I tell you to do and read - yes. You will certainly know enough to do a successful satellite dish or aerial installation.

Is there really an opportunity to make good money in this business?

Yes, yes YES! In the run up to "digital switchover" more and more people are getting Sky and Freeview systems installed. Those who already have systems are getting additional rooms wired up. Hotel and apartment block owners are already panicking because they need the entire building rewiring and they can't find a professional to take on the job. You need to get onto this "bandwaggon" now!

Just yesterday I was talking to Phil, a one-man installation company. He told me: "It's going crazy. I had twenty-one phone calls in the morning before I left. I could have spent all day just answering the phone. I had to put the answerphone on and leave".

So how much could I realistically earn?

I'd say realistically £50,000 a year but it's certainly possible to earn £100,000. Phil said to me yesterday (12/12/06): "I had to install a dish and an aerial on a mast, connect them into a multiswitch and connect the multiswitch to the 16 cables that had already been installed by the contractors. It took me four hours and I charged £1200. The cost of the parts was under £100. Not bad, eh?"

I reckon that earning nearly £300 an hour is "not bad", don't you?

(Phil is an ex-Sky installer, by the way. Sky used to pay him £25 per job. He decided he wanted a proper wage).

Is this really an easy way to make money?

Heck, no! Who told you it was easy? You need to be fit, able to carry and climb a ladder. You need to handle sometimes awkward customers and abysmal weather. This job is not for a wimp. You'll arrive home knackered but, hopefully, feeling a sense of achievement. (That's something that most jobs don't offer). No, it's not easy but it can be fun. And you'll be your own boss. You can take time off when you need to, not when the boss says you can (or can't).

How do I know you won't rip me off?

Ask anyone who knows me. I deliver on my promises. And you can cancel your subscription through Paypal at any time. But I urge you to give me a chance. The first few lessons are for beginners to the business. But it gets harder and more "technical" as the lessons progress.

I am interested in doing the Installation course but would like to know if it can be completed any quicker than 20 weeks?

Yes it can. You receive the first lesson link immediately so you'll get the 20th after only 19 weeks! :-)

Of course you can start your business before the end of the course. In fact we encourage you to get some practice because that's when the learning really begins.

Can I buy all the lessons in one go? I've already started my business!

No it's designed as a course of weekly lessons. There's a lot to learn.

Can I miss out the bits about starting/running a business?

No, the course is designed as a complete series of lessons to give you everything. Experience shows that most installers are reasonably good at the installations but hopeless at making real money. The course aims to change that.

I can't do this kind of physical work so I'm interested to know whether you give any training for workshop repairs - repairing Digiboxes and stuff like that?

We don't provide specific training but we do publish a couple of eBooks:-

In addition, if you can carry out fairly simple soldering work on power supplies, you could register on our Repairers page:-

Comments from previous students

I currently run a guesthouse and the course has enabled me to set up a satellite system on the premises feeding satellite to all 7 rooms. I can confidently say the course is worth every penny and has already paid for itself many times over! Thank you.

The only criticism I have is the file formats of audio/video interviews etc. All inaccessible to me: wouldn't standard mp3 have been better or easier for everyone?

Ric

The audio files employ "Flash" which all modern browsers can use if you have the "Flash plugin". However, the files are actually mp3 format so I've put links to them on the "Library" page.

I see sat tv mainly as a hobby at the moment. I have quite a well paying job (nowhere near 100k though). If I was to be made redundant then I would definitely try and set up a business.

I work 4-on 4-off shifts and maybe there is room within this set-up to make some money doing installs.

I've not set up a website or used the forums because of these reasons.

The course has been great and given me plenty of ideas, the latest lesson, setting up plasma tvs is an excellent idea. I bought a projector and set up home cinema last year, it does the job and visitors have been impressed. I've only hidden wires in mini-trunking, but here must be a market for people (with plenty of money) to have this job done properly for them.

Best regards and continued success to you and your team

Dean

A well written course with plenty of 'Tips'.

When any help required only an email away, with a fast response.

Alan

Excellent course. I intend to set up an installation business and web site in the near future as soon as I get time. By word of mouth I've got a 21 room carehome 14 new terraced houses and 3 self-build bungalows to install all within half mile from home. Looking good so far!

Steven

Really good!

Eric

I am more interested in the technical side, rather than the business side. I hope to emigrate in a couple of years or so and this knowledge will be very useful in my new country. I will keep up with current developments after this course, with Satcure amongst others. I have not yet got around to the book (should have, no excuse!!)

Robert

More help with actual dish set up using a meter would have been useful or pointers to same web info. Info on skycards difficult to grasp. Can boxes be upgraded to sky card use (here in Spain) or do they have to come with card? Terrestrial aerial info is not much use here in Spain, but if I was in UK then I think whole course very useful. Here in Spain, very difficult to get hold of anything, but the basics - dishes and boxes!

Can't even get meters delivered out here - have to wait for friends visiting. I still think the course was worth it. Rick

You can call Sky from Spain to get your Sky card activated but you must make sure that Sky don't find out that you are not in the UK! The course includes details of a couple of trade suppliers in Spain. SatCure can supply meters to Spain. Just tell us what you want!

I have found the course really useful. However I'm in the process of moving myself back from France (living in hotels and using WiFi to communicate) and haven't had the time to fully study the lessons.

I will be able to spend more time on it shortly as we move into a house this Tuesday.

Trevor

Course was excellent all in all, gave me my best supplier as well which was worth the money alone. Course book also excellent (takes a bit of time to understand but I'm getting there!)

Thanks

Colin

Just a note from a potential customer:

I live in Kirkby Lonsdale and I can't find a satellite installer who can come and realign my dish in less than a fortnight! Where are all the installers in Cumbria? Will you please train some up so I can get my system fixed? Price no object.

Thanks

Gresham

I recommend Aerialek in Dalton-in-Furness, if you can't find anyone nearer.

(Gresham replied later to say that Aerialek had visited him and done an excellent job.)

Hi Martin,

Thank you very much for the final installation of your e-course, and the 'mention in despatches'. I've enjoyed the entrepreneurial approach in which it has been presented and you seem to have overcome many problems to deliver the course in a practical and pragmatic way.

Over the years I've had recourse to use your services from time to time and your consistently high quality products and service has led me to recommend you many time to the engineering and non-engineering fraternity of  friends and colleagues alike and it says something when none of them have had anything but praise for your assistance with products and advice.

Hopefully, I shall make use of the information that I've learnt whilst subscribing to this course and maybe even make some money from it!

Very best wishes for the future,

Alan

Thanks, Alan. I'll pass your thanks to the Sales team. They don't get many thanks for the hard work they do.
