I'm flying back to the UK for a "holiday" on June 1st so this issue is a bit "rushed". Apologies! Because my ISP tried to charge me even more money (not cheap to begin with) I have done away with "mirror" sites. So no matter whether you go to satcure.co.uk. satcure.net or satcure.com you will end up looking at the same server. This makes my job easier and saves money but it does put "all our eggs in one basket". If too many people try to look at this in one month, it will shut down. That's why I haven't notified everyone about this Review yet. I don't want a big rush before June 1st - just in case! How about this for "freeloading"? Please, folks, who is the genius in your operation that added the red lettered note to the top of the instructions page on how to assemble F-connectors? It's translation is simple: "Either buy something or go away". That's offensive, although I've used kinder words than what first came to my mind. For one thing, my looking at your web page has cost you nothing but (had) gained you some good will. I've used it many times as a hobbyist over the years and I think my buddy has it on his web site under "Useful links" I'll tell him to take it off. For a second thing, if I WERE a potential customer, how much motivation do you think I would have to purchase from a company that has already reprimanded me before I even called? This is nuts, folks. For the sake of your own business, take that note off there. I've saved it on my PC so I shan't be a bother again. Gary You mean our polite request: "This section is for SatCure customers only. If you are not yet a customer, please show your gratitude by buying an eBook or a physical product from us." ? I always wondered why we'd never had an order from you folks in Canada! I just assumed it was because of the enormously high shipping costs. (You don't feel even a teensy weensy pang of guilt about stealing our information and giving nothing in return? Shame on you.) That's just the way I am after answering customers' questions for the last fourteen years. Please don't take offence. Sometimes I'm a little tired, ratty or impatient and it shows! Generally, if you ask for a free reply, you'll get what you pay for. If you DO have a question, PLEASE read the web site information and eBooks first. I get the same questions day after day because people can't be bothered to look.) You missed off both Es. SiliconE greasE. :-) as you recomend with similar effect but perhaps not quite as good. Thanks in anticipation Mckenzie Lithium grease is designed for use in high temperature applications such as wheel bearings. It contains a lithium "soap" base, which is hygroscopic (absorbs moisture) - a feature which makes it unsuitable for low-temperature applications such as car steering joints and (possibly) 'F' plugs. For low-temperature applications use a calcium-soap base grease, such as "Castrol CL". I don't know of any substitute for silicone grease, which works as well at keeping out moisture, and doesn't oxidise. Amplified UHF and DAB supplied through one coax cable. My current decombiner (volex) does not seem to screen and I get a small electric shock from the radio/cd player (Denon DCD-M35DAB) outer casing and a degraded DAB signal when the TV is connected to the decombiner. The Player has been checked by Denon so I assume it is OK, the TV is just an old CRT model (small screen used in kitchen) and I have changed all connecting cables with no benefit. The electric shock is definitely eminating from the wall plate as I can feel it when no output system cable is connected. Do you therefore have a wall plate that will solve my electric shock and interference issues. Many thanks Neil. Hi, Neil. One or more pieces of your equipment has a "floating chassis" which needs to be earthed. If you connect a wire to the earth pin of a 3-pin household plug, that should do the job. However, make VERY sure that this insulated wire is colour-coded green-yellow* and, for safety sake, make sure that it can not come loose inside the plug and touch the live pin. If possible, remove the fuse and the live pin altogether. You can experiment with the connection point of this wire but it probably needs to go to a chassis screw of your Denon unit. *You could strip the green-yellow wire from a length of 3-core mains cable. Model number on label or rear panel: DRX895 Hi I had Sky multiroom installed Monday, new 1Tb box main room and old Thomson box (May06) another room. The engineer fitted a new dish and LNB, upon watching a programme Tuesday night we noticed the PQ has deteriorated, upon further investigation we noticed this was apparent on both boxes and noticeable when viewed on the TV and projector, prior to the install the PQ was superb on both sources. I'm leaning towards the LNB as the problem, I have the engineer calling again but if the issue isn't resolved I can go about in two ways, fit the old LNB back on, or purchase a new LNB from yourselves. My question is - are there varying degrees of quality in LNB's that are compatible to the Sky system? Is this likely to resolve my issue? Can you recommend a good quality LNB. Also, would a bigger dish/new LNB help, I live near Leeds? Regards Bob Hi, Bob. It is impossible for an LNB to affect picture quality. The signal is "scrambled" (digitally multiplexed) and the Digibox reconstitutes the picture and sound using error-correction so that it is perfect. Only when the signal is so poor that the error-correction fails will you see an effect and that will be break-up of the picture into coloured squares. You will never see a "graininess" or quality issue, as you would with analogue. (If there's fast movement and if the source material is poor, you'll see "smearing" and/or "ghost trails". This has nothing to do with signal quality.) I recommend that you check your Scart/HDMI connections. Remove any RF cables to make sure you aren't accidentally tuned in to an RF signal. Also, as you have a Thomson box which is renowned for PSU failure (see our web site), please unplug and remove this from the system, since it can cause various symptoms. I regret that I've lost a sale but I hope this helps you to resolve your problem. If not, please call Sky to get it looked at under warranty. Regards Chris It depends on exactly what dish is in your kit. You should contact your supplier. The only LNB holders that we have available are here: http://www.satcure.co.uk/accs/page1a.htm#lnbrack I note that these are produced by different manufacters and wondered if they all use the same technology allowing the products to be interchanged. Or must one stick with a single manufacturer. Regards Peter Hi, Peter. A diplexer handling, for example, TV (UHF) and satellite has a specified crossover frequency that is the same for all manufacturers. I hope this is what you mean. However I dont know if I need to add the following as well: Your product page says that this product "Requires Diplex wall plates to separate UHF and VHF (or the triplex decombiner shown below)." Can you explain what is the purpose of the triplexer? Normally, it separates (or combines) Radio, TV and satellite signals - dependent on the model. Please read the model-specific information. Most diplexers and triplexers are reversible - they can be used as combiner or decombiner of the specific frequency bands that they handle. Do I need it if I plan to connect only 1 TV to the antenna? (I think that I only need it if I connect more than 1 TV, am I right?) No, you are not. See above. And see: http://www.satcure.com/tech/combiners.htm I'm having some issues with it and I want to repair the PSU, but it looks different from the ones on your website. The psu has a pSATA power connection and a 12 pin connection to the mobo. Can you tell me the kit I will need to replace the capacitors please, just so I'm sure I will buy the right one? Cheers Andy Hi, Andy. We don't currently offer a kit for that model. I recommend you contact Michael at Digifix: http://www.digifixltd.co.uk Thanks Andrew W. If you are using the full facilities of a Sky+ and a Sky+HD Digibox, you must have (as a minimum) a quad-output LNB. Since I don't know exactly what your existing LNB is or which version zone 2 minidish you will buy, I can only point you to this explanation:- http://www.satcure.co.uk/accs/quad_sky_lnb.htm Please note that a larger dish does not usually provide a good solution for signal interference from trees. The effects of branches creating a "diffusion grating" are complex and quite often the only solution is to cut a metre-diameter hole through which the dish can "see" the satellites. I've been looking at the Multimo dish on your website, which seems to indicate that it can be used inside, and I wanted to know if it can be used with Sky HD, (there does seem to be ability to have for Twin-output, does this mean it would work?) Sky+ and Sky+HD do require a twin-output LNB on the dish, so the twin-output Multimo will work (provided that you position it where it can get an adequate signal). and also if there would be a performance impact if using it for Sky HD (does HD require a better signal). There is evidence to suggest that the slightest interruption in signal (which might not be noticed on an ordinary Digibox) can cause a recording to fail. I would be looking to use it with an Amstrad DRX895 Sky+HD Digibox (not yet bought, reason for buying the 1TB disk), and live in the southwest near swindon. It would be behind a double glazed window. Dylan A double-glazed window will probably attenuate the signal too much. A single polycarbonate (plastic) pane works better, although it's best to have nothing at all in the way. As we point out on the web site, you should test with a standard Sky minidish to begin with. If this works OK, then the Multimo ought to be OK, too. I think I need: 1* Double Wall Box Plate (your code C12843) 4* Inserts for F connectors to put the amplifier to (your code C13846) 4* Single Wall Plates (one for each room) code 100 00107 I then need F connectors but your site mentions that I man need 90 degree connectors to use with the above plates? I have put deep boxes in so will I be ok without these so: 8* WF1FPLUG to go on the cable behind each of the above plates. or do I need 8* 090-2824 as well? Looking foward to getting this in! Many thanks Tim Hi, Tim. See http://www.satcure.co.uk/accs/page15b.htm In the top picture you can see that all modules are top (or bottom) entry, so a cable coming through the side of a wall box will go straight in. Mind you, it can be quite fiddly! See the pictures at the bottom of this page: http://www.satcure.co.uk/tech/wall_plates.htm You might need a 090-2824 right-angle adapter but unlikely. However, if you order everything that you might need you can return what you don't want for a refund. We sell lots of adapters and there's no "test and restock" fee for them, so there's no time limit for their return on this occasion. I have it in mind to utilise their system/components/fibre optic cable to introduce satellite feed into most rooms in my house. This will enable me to migrate from analogue receiving to full digital receiving before my area switch-over! I am sure I and fellow readers of your excellent Review would appreciate an expert view. With my kind regards, John N. One or more companies are already offering the system for sale. You are looking at a minimum cost of £400, which pretty much rules it out for most private dwellings. There is an issue with cleaning the optical connection and you have to buy pre-made lengths of terminated fibre. However, I'm sure it works just fine. Our usual offer of a tenner for the first review still stands! We can obtain the bits if required but I'm not planning to review it personally. As the Guru of all things satellite - what can you tell me about them? I can see the advantage of long runs and low dropout but as we have managed a 100m run on your CT125 without a problem I can't see the point. You still have to run the cables from the splitters and we did a quad job on 4 villas the furthest about 85m so we would still have had long runs from the splitters. Kevin P. If you Google: invacom fibre optic lnb you'll find nearly 4000 pages about this. The single fibre from the LNB can go to a splitter to feed several dwellings or rooms. In each dwelling or room you'll have a converter box with 'F' connector outputs to connect to your receiver. The advantages are: 1. almost no signal loss 2. very thin "cable" 3. complete immunity from lightning strike 4. LNB powered by a single 12v supply - will I be able get satellite & Terrestrial receivers to receive HD broadcast from down/up link port of the DDU with 304115 Triplexed DDU Decombiner? For example - if I connect SAT out of 304115 to HD Sat box & TV out to HD freeview box, would these boxes be able to receive HD quality signal? I'm not sure I understand. The "SAT" connections carry the LNB signal. If you connect an "HD" box then it will decode the appropriate signal. The "TV" connections carry the aerial signal. If you connect a Freeview receiver then it will decode the Freeview signals (if your aerial is receiving them). The Loft Box does nothing to affect the signals. If not can you advise ? Kind regards Graham P. That depends very much on what you want to achieve and what sockets are available on the TV. An RF cable will give only mono audio and mediocre picture. Are you trying to connect the Sky+Digibox to the TV with 12m of cable or are you trying to move it closer to the TV? (You don't state and I can't guess.) Anyway, please see http://www.satcure.co.uk/tech/avhelp.htm What I want to know (plus any other relevant information): Purchased pvr Nov 2009, signal not always good, but improved after small amplifier installed near tv. Just after easter 2010, lost all channels, contacted humax, performed manual tune, and gave us detail on which mux'es to search on. Gave us 5 muxes, but one mux 22, cannot get good enough quality. Strength is 100% ,but quality flucates from 0 - 10%. The mux has itv, ch 4 and 5. All other mux channels fine. Joe You haven't actually stated what you want to know so I'll simply make some comments based on the above facts:- 1. If your system was OK in 2009 it should still be OK in 2010 because AFAIK nothing has changed with the C.P. transmission (but you should check to make sure I'm right). That being the case, something must have changed in or near your house. Maybe somebody the something into the loft, or moved something metallic in a bedroom below? The loft is the worst place to put an aerial. See http://www.satcure.com/tech/freeview_problems.htm 2. You have chosen the worst possible aerial for C.P. which provides "Group A" transmissions (not wideband). By using a wideband aerial you are inviting unwanted signals that could interfere. 3. C.P. has strong analogue signals until switch-off. If your digital signal indication is 100%, that means the analogue signal must be at least 120%, which will "swamp" the Freeview tuner. 4. Your amplifier is in the worst possible location. If you need an amplifier (and I doubt it) then it should be near the aerial. 5. Your "old" cable may be unsuitable. 6. Your Humax could be faulty. Test your system with a different Freeview receiver. However, you should note that the Humax may simply be getting "tired" and more susceptible to problems caused by a borderline aerial system. At your location you *ought* to be using a log-periodic aerial with double-screened cable. The predicted signal is strong, so an amplifier should not be needed. See http://www.satcure.com/tech/best_aerial.htm However, bear in mind that using the correct aerial may not solve the problem if there's some other fault or local interference. I recommend that you read our web site notes carefully and try to eliminate all the possible causes. My questions are: 1) Is the Disky2Quad on http://www.satcure.co.uk/accs/zone2_sky_minidish.htm the same as the 'Need a Dish as well' on http://www.satcure.co.uk/accs/easier.htm ? Yes. 70cm. 2) How long is the WF100 twin cable that is supplied with 'Need a Dish as well' on http://www.satcure.co.uk/accs/easier.htm ? 15m as per the LNB kit (but WF100 if you order that). 3) I want to run the WF100 twin cable down the outside wall and then through the wall into the downstairs living room. Will I need to split the twin cable before going through the wall. Yes, unless you can drill an oval hole. Does this mean I need two Internal wall grommets for 10mm hole? If so then I presume this means that WF100 twin cables are rarely found running inside houses from the outside. Rarely but not impossible if you drill a 15mm hole. 4) When I order a meter on http://www.satcure.co.uk/accs/page6.htm does it come with all the necessary cabling and connectors? The SATFINDER meter comes with a single, short, ready-made lead. http://www.satcure.co.uk/tech/satmeter.htm Simon W. Unfortunately, "40cm dish" is too vague. However, even if you told me the manufacturer and age of the dish, I'd still be unable to help. Please see: http://www.satcure.co.uk/accs/octo_sky_lnb.htm Please bear in mind that OCTO LNBs had not been invented when Sky installed the original dishes in 1999, so don't expect them to fit. Brian I've been soldering since I was ten (48 years) so I think it's an absolute doddle. However, you might like to get a second opinion on the forums from somebody who has done it only once. This might help: http://www.satcure.co.uk/accs/page3.htm#suplus Terry R. You may need the ladder. See http://www.satcure.co.uk/accs/quad_sky_lnb.htm Luki A. The plastic spigot is part of the LNB. We do stock a couple of LNB conversion brackets but I can't guarantee that either would be suitable. Nor could I guarantee that any specific LNB would fit your (unknown version) Sky minidish, since they are now up to MK4. See http://www.satcure.co.uk/accs/quad_sky_lnb.htm The Freeview aerial is not installed yet but anyway is not relevant to my question. Gerry See http://www.satcure.com/tech/lofthelp.htm You will note, from the "internal signal paths" diagram that Freeview must be included in the "Return" if you want it to be available in bedrooms. All Loft Boxes work in a similar way so the choice of box is a personal one. Do Loftboxes like the Global and Triax distribute digital RF signals which can then be fed into a FreeView tuner (or FreeView enabled TV) that can be tuned to a different FreeView digital channel in each room as in my uploaded diagram? Yes or do they simply distribute analog UHF channels merged with any modulated input returned from the main room? They are unable to distinguish or separate analogue and digital signals. 2. I have also seen references to the distributed signals being lower quality than the original, particularly with reference to the Global loftbox. Is the Triax DDU112 any better in the respect? Thanks Martyn All answered here http://www.satcure.com/tech/lofthelp.htm with phrases like "All Digiboxes produce the same analogue "RF Output" quality picture with MONO audio." and "The Loft Box passes Freeview aerial signals unaltered so the Freeview picture should be perfect on all TV sets." Please read our free information carefully and look at the diagram that shows internal signal paths. 45 meters of WF 100 or WF 125 cable 45 meters of alcothene (water pipe) to place the cable within to bury it - maybe in two sections with a joiner as the cable can be difficult to thread over the 45 meter length? It's spelt "Alkathene" I think. Self amalgamating tape - to seal the ends of the pipe and maybe F plug to connect cable to dish Waterproof boot for F plug Can you please confirm that the above is correct? Self-amalgamating tape is not suitable for sealing where the cables go in/come out of trunking. You should pump in a liquid sealant such as silicone or expanding foam to fill the gaps. Give me a total price including next day delivery? And confirm it will arrive by the 22nd latest? I live in Highland. See http://www.satcure.co.uk/useful/sales_help.htm#cost and http://www.satcure.co.uk/useful/sales_help.htm#nextday Recommended to get a Satellite Dish. What dish would you recommend ie size etc? If you want Sky programmes, see the second map on this page: What receiver also? If you want Sky programmes, you'll need a Sky Digibox and subscription. Otherwise for UK Freesat programmes you'll need a Sky or Freesat receiver. Or for French (or other) programmes, please refer to our web site. What else would I need ie cable, remote, signal finder etc? See http://www.satcure.co.uk/installing_sky_digital.htm Steve T. Easier simply to connect a SkyLink remote extender to the RF output socket: http://www.satcure.co.uk/accs/page3.htm (Click on the "Magic Eye review" link for more info.) THANK YOU Hi, I received the capacitor kit for my Sky (Thomson HD)promptly. I dusted off my old Weller soldering iron and got to work. Installation of the kit was straightforward enough and took me a little over an hour. All is now working perfectly. I'd lost over half my channels and I was concerned that I needed a new box or to get a ladder out and replace the LNB. One very satisfied customer. Many Thanks Seamus. Hi guys, Just a quick message to say that the items arrived safely today. Many thx. Carl W. any thanks for your promt attention to my order (not enough cable ordered last time. regards John I ordered my goods on Wednesday and everything was delivered on Thursday, excellent service. Thank you. With regard to the alkathene pipe on page 8 of your on line catalogue, I needed 2 45m lengths of WF100 cable and 25m of this was to be run in a 25m x 25mm dia length of alkathene pipe, I cut the 100m length of cable in half and taped them together with insulating tape every 2m or so and pushed the two together down the pipe with no problems. I straightened the pipe out first and weighed it down to keep it as straight as possible. No vacuum cleaners or marbles needed!! Thanks again for a great service; I will be recommending you to all my friends. John R. Hi Thanks for your excellent service and very informative website from which I learnt a great deal. I now have all digital channels working properly and no dodgy extension cables running up the stairs! I can totally recommend the pre made cables as this saved me a lot of messing around, and best to let the pro's tackle the job! Regards Will Hi, I ordered my cable on Friday lunch time and it arrived the next day in the morning. Just wanted to say I am very impressed with the speedy turn around and delivery. I did consider buying this on ebay but sometimes the delivery times can be a bit dodgy. Therefore your quick delviery of my order has reinforced my decision to buy from yourselves, I will definately be visitng the website again if I need anything in the future, Thanks again, regards Gavin A BIG "thank you" to all those who took the trouble to write to us! Hi - I have SkyHD and Sky+ on multiroom. I have some trees causing interference and am considering upgrade to Zone 2 minidish. Can I use my existing LNB (double I think)?
I'm looking to install sky, but can't use an outside dish, or would need one which could fit on a window sill, and wouldn't be obtrusive :)
I am going to split my satellite using a 4 way amplifier (so 1 input and 4 rooms running off the amplifier).
I am on your SatCure Satellite Review mailing list and enjoy the Review's content. Has there been or is there likely to be information on 'Global Invacom' Fibre Systems (http://www.globalinvacom.com/products/products.php)?
I have just discovered the fibre optic LNB in a shop here. I have searched the net for info and find that Invacom produce one (as you know we only use Invacom on our big dishes - preferably Quad). The LNB here had what looked like ordinary coax splitters with it but the Invacom one I found on the net seems to need (expensive) switch devices (dual or quad).
I am about to purchase Triax 333112 DDU 8-way Loft Box from your web site, before I do that I like to a point below;
I'm looking to put a flat screen up on our bedroom wall in a position which is unfortunately about 12m away from where the existing Sky Plus box is situated. Is you part number FF15MB, plus barrel, what I would need please ?
Hi, I am looking to order a satellite system from you.
Currently have 40cm dish with Quattro LNB feeding Humax & Sky boxes. Want an Octo LNB with appropriate bracket and new dish plus any "boots" required plus silicone grease and 100m of Sat quality coax. Can you show me compatable items, signal is OK but not brilliant and this will ideally be wall mounted.
How fiddly is it to solder the new capacitors onto the Thomson Sky HD PSU board? How easy would it be to screw it up if I am not an expert with a soldering iron? Thanks very much.
I am thinking of buying an additional pass-thru distribution amp for the output from the additional Skybox and combining an output from this amp with the output from the original paas-thru amp using an 73237 splitter/combiner and feeding the output from this into my 8 way amp input for distibution to all other TVs. Only problem is that only skylinks linked directly to each pass-thru amp can control that particular skybox. I would like to control either skybox from any skylink. Is this possible?
Hi. I want to replace a single output LNB on a Sky mini-dish fitted in 2007 with one of your quad output units. The current LNB bears the brand WMC on the side and has some sort of switch behind the head. Can you tell from this what the spigot size is or do I need to get up there and measure it? Many thanks.
Hi. I have a Sky Satellite dish with a Thomson 14322 LNB with a bracket which fits INTO the arm of the dish. Bought Sept 08. This plastic bracket is now broken (thanks to my window cleaner!). Is it possible to buy just the bracket, or do I have to buy the whole LNB thing. Many thanks, Luki.
I purchased your eBook Piping TV ... back in January and from that advised my son on the cabling to have installed during his house refurbishment. He was going to have Sky but has now opted for Virgin Cable. I am not asking any questions about the Virgin stuff but on the choice of redistribution amplifier. I will upload sketch after sending this and would like confirmation before purchase that the Labgear HD681S is a suitable choice for this (or if not which one would you recommend).
1. A simple question I hope but despite searching various references including "piping TV around the house" is still not clear in my mind:
Sky are due to install a Sky+ system on Monday 24th May. Due to trees the dish will have to be mounted on a strainer 45 meters from my home. I have to install the cabling and having read your Installing Book their cable is no good after 20 meters. I think I am therefore looking for :
