EuroSports Report

The Olympics are rapidly approaching, and no doubt there will be wall to wall coverage of the main events on the main tv channels as normal.

However, if you are a sports fan needing more of a fix, there is still time to get a satellite system installed to give you additional sports coverage this summer. One of the main pan-European sports channels is Eurosport. They are available on Sky of course, but only as part of the pay TV service. However, there are still free versions of the channel available if you know where to look. For starters, the old analogue Eurosport International service is still around. If you have an old Sky analogue receiver knocking around in a cupboard, blow the dust bunnies out of it, and connect it up to a suitable dish. Analogue receivers are easy to set up - most people who are reasonable at DIY can get a dish set up in a couple of hours.

There is some information about how I set a dish up on my AnalogueSat web site:

www.analoguesat.co.uk

Check out the "Installing a dish" / "Getting Started" sections.

Also, you may remember that Martin collected a lot of information about Eurosport for the Tour de France here:

http://www.your-book.co.uk/tour.htm

If you don't have a receiver, analogue receivers are available at minimum cost second hand from several sources, although you will have to hunt around for a suitable candidate. The best thing to do is ask around friends and workmates - it's amazing how many old receivers are lying around looking for a good home. Alternatively, if you are an Ebay user, have a search for "analogue satellite" or something similar. My web site has a page with some ideas of where to get one in the "Analogue receivers - where to get one" section. In addition, the guys advertising on the following SatCure page have a few analogue receivers left:

http://www.satcure.com/accs/page10.htm

You will need to point your dish at the satellites at 19.2 degrees East, and tune your receiver to 11259 V.

If you need a dish & LNB, check out the Satcure catalogue. If you are in the northern half of the UK, an 80cm dish is recommended, if you are located in the southern half, then a 60cm will be suitable.

Dishes can be found here:

http://www.satcure.com/accs/page2.htm

and LNBs are here:

http://www.satcure.com/accs/page1a.htm

If you want to go digital, then unfortunately, there are no English language versions of Eurosport currently Free To Air. However, a German language version is clear on 19.2 degrees East and, as a bonus, there will be Olympic coverage on some of the numerous German channels available in the clear off the Astra 1 satellite constellation.

Check out the digital receivers here:

Panasonic Problems

The widely reported problems with the TU-DSB30 Sky Digibox are looking more and more like a software fault. And you can't even be certain which revision you have. According to a man who has looked at the actual code, there have been several different code versions while the number remained the same. So your EPG software may be 3.2.11 and your Operating System may be 1.2S4F3 but it may not be the *latest*. (And even if it is, it may still cause problems).

Some models are also giving problems if RGB is selected. If you want this fixing it means getting the tuner module modified.

Sky Plus problems

Sky Plus also has problems which can only be due to software or to corruption of files (which basically means software). At present the only "cure" is to use the "housekeeping" menu option to erase the Hard Drive contents. Great.

Special offers

On a brighter note, we've bought a few quad-output LNBs at a low price so we are passing the savings to you, our loyal readers. You can run up to four standard Digiboxes off a quad-output LNB or up to two SKY+ Digiboxes, or a combination of the two. Please note that we don't recommend these LNBs for use outside the UK or for use with Panasonic Digiboxes (unless our panafix2d filter has been fitted). Your Panasonic Digibox *might* work all right but we'd rather not take the risk. The number of LNBs is limited so please don't order more than one per person.

Anyone interested in web site design might like a copy of my new tutorial, which takes the form of an eBook with screenshot movie clips, audio and text. All you need is Acrobat reader and QuickTime (which most people have anyway as they are free to download). The tutorial guides you through the design of web pages, shows you how to link them together to make a web site and how to upload the files to your server so the world can see your work. Also explained is how to create a unique auction page for Ebay with text styles and as many pictures as you want. As you can rent web space for just £22 a year, including your own personal web site address, there's really no excuse for not doing it! You can share your holiday photos with friends around the world, create a Chistmas greetings card or perhaps earn money from the Google "Adsense" system.

Wrong BBC and ITV Regions

My location is: Dorset. DT3

Equipment made by: Grundig Freeview

Dear Sir, I recently moved from DT2 to DT3 postcode area.

My sky BBC101 was South and my ITV 103was Meridian. I carried on recieving the channels for about a week but then BBC1 changed to West Country and so did ITV, nothing was changed by me I assume the satellite did it.

How can I go about simply making my Sky channel 101 South and my channel 103 Meridian again, I believe you can do it with the remote. I am a pensioner of several years and can not afford to get the Sky engineers out again.

Yours sincerely,

David

I'm a little confused because you say you have a Grundig Freeview digital terrestrial receiver but your question seems to be about a Sky Digibox.

The regional channels that you receive are governed by your postcode on Sky's database. As you presumably informed them of your change of address, they have updated their computer so that your programmes are correct for your postcode.

This may not be what you want but the only way around it is to maintain your card subscription from the old address which, presumably, is not feasible.

Otherwise you'll simply have to get used to using channel 954 to get BBC1 south (program it as one of your 20 favourites).

Receiving the ITV channel of your choice is trickier but it is explained on this web page:

http://www.vowles-home.demon.co.uk/Sat/SkyITV.htm

If you feel that you are receiving the wrong programmes for your location, you should contact the BBC and ITV to point out the problem. If enough people do this, they may correct the fault.

The Cool Book Shop web site URL expired while I was on holiday. Apparently I had missed the renewal date. I made the payment and it was rejected. I could probably sort this out but, frankly, I can't be bothered and I think I'll just let it die. You'll find the book shop at http://www.your-book.co.uk/coolbooks instead.
