Understanding Sky Satellite TV tells you everything you need to know about digital TV and Sky in particular. It explains what you need, how the signal is transmitted and received and how to get the free channels. It includes a glossary of technical terms that will increase your understanding and let you make sensible and cost-sensitive decisions about what to buy. | >Question: >How do I get my remote apart to clean the contacts with alcohol? It clips together but there are 2 screws holding the remote together. One is in the battery compartment, the other is behind the black curved plastic 'lens' at the top of the remote (which you can prise out). If you warm the remote with a hair dryer, the plastic becomes more flexible and less likely to break the clips - but don't melt it! Some faults are easy to fix - such as cleaning the rubber contacts and soldering the battery spring clips if the connection fractures. Also make sure the LED and resonator are firmly soldered in place. >Question >My system operates via a Yamaha RXV795 Amplifier, >would you know if there is a 4 digit code or some other way to make the >Sky remote operate the Volume control on the Amp? >Question >Will the Sky remote operate my microwave oven / car alarm / Hi-Fi / garage door / DVD player etc? No. The standard Sky remote is designed to operate the Sky Digibox and many (not all) TV sets. IT WILL NOT OPERATE ANYTHING ELSE. As always my answer is that you should write to BskyB to request this feature. If enough people ask, they will implement it in the next revision. If nobody asks then it definitely won't happen. Note: The Sky Plus remote WILL control some equipment. See this page for details: http://www.morlocks.co.uk/remote-setup.htm (This site keeps moving. Please tell me if the link no longer works. Please be specific and tell me "The link http://www.morlocks.co.uk/remote-setup.htm at http://www.satcure.co.uk/tech/digicode.htm no longer works"). >Question >How do I control my Equipment from two bedrooms? Easy, click HERE Aspect ratios 9:16 and 4:3 If you have both widescreen and 4:3 TVs connected to the RF2 output using tv-links then they would normally have to share the picture format set in the second location picture format setting. This would then either leave black lines on the widescreen tv or a stretched picture on the 4:3 TV. There is a way around this: Set the default picture format to widescreen. Set the second location picture format to 4:3 Then on each sky remote to be used for widescreen use the following sequence: - TV
- Blue+select led flash twice
- 1
- Select
- Sky
Each tv used by an updated remote would automatically set the format to widescreen. Unmodified remotes would set the format to 4:3. To change the remote back to default use the following sequence - TV
- Blue+select led flash twice
- 0
- Select
- Sky
Info kindly supplied by Dominic Thomas. Note: this may work only with version 6 remotes onwards. | Your website includes the following "tip" for selecting the correct viewing format, if you have widescreen AND 4:3 TVs connected to the same RF2 output, with tv-links. All TVs connected to the RF2 output would normally share the picture format of the second location picture format setting. This would then leave black lines on the widescreen TV or a stretched picture on the 4:3 TV. Your web-site suggests the following solution to the problem: Set the default picture format to widescreen. Set the second location picture format to 4:3. Then on each Sky Remote Control intended for widescreen, re-configure the Remote by keying the following sequence: -.. TV -.. Blue+select led flash twice -.. 1 -.. Select -.. Sky Use of the updated remote via a tv-link should automatically select widescreen output for all TVs. Unmodified remotes should re-set the output to 4:3. However, when I re-configured standard Remote Controls (Rev 6 and Rev 4), I achieved a different (and rather unexpected result). After I had entered the suggested key sequence, the standard remote control continued to control every function on my Pace 2200 Sky Receiver. Following "conversion", it ALSO operated ALL of the functions on my Amstrad Sky+ receiver (not merely the programme up and programme down functions). However, the buttons on the standard Remote Control do not include the "R", >, <<, >> or STOP keys, so you cannot use a "converted" Remote Control for controlling recording or playback. Logically, I would have expected the re-configured Remote Control to operate: - EITHER the Sky+ receiver - OR the standard Sky receiver but not both types of receiver at the same time. I wonder whether you can explain this phenomenon. You may wish to add the information to your web-site. | | Denis Martindale suggests: Press [Interactive], Sky Active > Help Centre > Set Up My Remote. EXAMPLE: Press select then press number 6 to jump to the M list then choose Matsui. Choose the 28WN20 to get code 0065 then follow instructions and finally press green to confirm it worked and press select to exit. BEKO 28421NDS Code 0742 This worked for the Beko 28421NDS pressing the 1 twice for the B list and using code 0742 for that TV model number. (Perhaps you could add this as an update procedure to help visitors check their set top boxes and TVs.) | There are at least FIVE versions of the remote control in use. The original remote with the word SKY inscribed within a white ellipse on the blue button. Second issue looks the same as the original but has updated codes. And the third issue has the word SKY with a crescent shaped swirl printed in white on the blue button. This version has a slightly different procedure to enter a 3 digit code. (The latest one has no white swirl on the blue SKY button). Only the latest version is available for sale from SatCure. Later versions have the version number on a label inside the battery compartment. - Programming the Sky remote to Operate the TV Receiver

Programming the SKY remote to operate the TV Receiver Before the remote control can operate the TV it must be programmed to do so. A 3 or 4 digit code can be entered to select the correct IR command set, held in the remote control's memory. There is a database held on chip, in the remote control, which holds the IR codes for around 90 to 92% of TV manufacturers. The 4 digit code identifies the make/manufacturer. All individual codes stored for each manufacturer are identified by a 3 digit code which is listed below. The easiest way to set up the remote is to input the 3 digit code for the TV receiver if it is available. If the 3 digit code is not known then an additional facility allows you to input a 4 digit manufacturer's code which then allows you to step through all codes held for that manufacturer until the correct code is identified. The very newest TV receiver codes may not be stored in memory and it will not be until the next update of the remote's memory that these TV receivers can be controlled by the Sky remote TO PROGRAM THE remote USING THE 3 DIGIT CODE: 1. Turn on the TV receiver 2. Press TV on the Sky Remote Control 3. Hold down SELECT and the RED buttons together for approximately two seconds, until the RED LED on the Sky remote blinks twice. 4. Enter three digit code from list for the receiver (early versions now flash twice). 5. Press select to enter code structure (the LED will flash twice if a valid code has been entered). 6. Now press the STDBY button and test other functions. Repeat if necessary until a code is found that works most common functions. TO PROGRAM THE remote USING THE 4 DIGIT CODE: 1. Turn your TV on. 2. Press tv on your Sky remote control. 3. Hold down select and the red button together for about two seconds, until the red light on the Sky remote control blinks twice. 4. Press tv on your Sky remote control again. 5. Key in the four digit code for your brand of TV. The light on the Sky remote control blinks twice. If the light blinks once only, recheck the code for your brand of TV and start again at Step 1. 6. Press the standby button on your Sky remote control. If your TV switches off, press select. The light on the Sky remote control blinks twice (code stored). If your TV does not switch off, press tv, then press the standby button. Repeat this (press tv, then standby) until your TV turns off, then press select (stores code). If at this point the LED on the Sky remote control blinks three times then all possible codes for that make of receiver have been checked. Repeat from step one, ensuring that you enter the correct manufacturer code. At the end of the sequence, if you see the TV Guide screen, the remote control setup process is complete. If you did not see the TV Guide screen, you must now complete the following steps. 8. Press tv on your Sky remote control. 9. Hold down select and the green button together for about two seconds, until the red light on the Sky remote control blinks twice. 10. Key in the number of the channel on your TV that you use for watching satellite TV. 11. Press select on your Sky remote control. The red light blinks twice. The remote control setup process is complete. If after trying this, you still have problems, call your broadcaster's help desk. For your broadcaster's help desk number, select the Telephone Numbers option from the Services screen. Identifying remote TV Remote Control Codes (Blink Back) If there is not a 3 digit code listed for your customers TV receiver then use the four digit method to find a code that works. The following steps will allow this code to be identified. 1. Press the TV button on the Sky remote 2. Hold down Select and the Red buttons together for approximately two seconds, until the Red LED on the Sky remote blinks twice. 3. Key in 990 on the remote. 4. Key in 1 on the numeric keypad and count the number of times the Red LED blinks. The number of blinks will indicate the first digit of the code Note that a 0 is represented by no blinks where you press the key. (My code is 081 so first time I tried it on my old Digibox remote I thought it wasn't working! And coming from a software background, I had a weird expectation that 10 blinks would be used for a 0!!!) Niall Gillespie 5. Input 2 on the numeric keypad and count the blinks to identify the second digit of the code. 6. Input 3 on the numeric keypad and count the blinks to identify the third digit of the code. 7. Write it down and keep it safely. |
